General Tips
For resume writers with limited employment history or experience limited to only high school or undergrad, keep your resume to one full page.
For all other resume writers, resume length can vary, but employers often request candidates only detail their last ten years of experience.
You may simply list jobs older than ten years if they are relevant to the job you wish to have.
The Est Institute suggests you maintain a long “master resume” that contains a repository of details about everything you’ve ever done. When submitting a resume to a specific position, you must cherry-pick your experience to include only what would be relevant to a hiring manager.
It is not recommended to carry one resume through several applications (i.e., modifying the original document every time you apply). You will forget critical experience over time.
Tailor your experience to the job for which you are applying. All jobs require skills that are transferable. It is up to you to prove that.
Utilize your digital thesaurus and diversify your verb usage. A hiring manager does not want to read that you “delivered” all six of your responsibilities.
Standardize your tenses by job. You did not “manage” and “analyzed.” You either “managed” and “analyzed” or “manage” and “analyze.”
Triple-check that your formatting is consistent (e.g., font size and type, spacing). An employer desires candidates who pay attention to detail.
Ensure you are using space on the page effectively. Your name does not have to be 36pt font; you shouldn’t end a bullet halfway across the page.
Do not rely on being given the opportunity to elaborate on your goodness of fit on a call; do it in writing. Your resume is intended to earn you an interview.
Do not include your address. People are creeps. City and state are sufficient.
